A Chuppah – Seventy Years in the Making

70 Years in the Making - Rabbi On Demand

Some stories remind you why you do this work. This one gave me chills.

A few weeks ago, I received a message – not from a bride or groom, but from their children.

Their parents, now in their 90s, are about to celebrate an incredible milestone: 70 years of marriage. They were married just after the war. Life was fragile. Resources were few. And while they exchanged vows and built a life together, they never stood under a chuppah.

No blessings. No glass breaking. No seven sacred moments. Just two people doing their best to move forward with love in the shadow of unimaginable loss.

Now, seven decades later, their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren want to give them a gift:
A real Chuppah. A Jewish wedding.

The one they never had. A chance to step under a chuppah and receive the blessings they were denied all those years ago.

When they asked me if I could help create something meaningful, the answer came without hesitation: Absolutely.

Together, we’re working on a ceremony that honours it all – their endurance, their love, their legacy.

It will be gentle and sacred. Full of lightness and reverence.

We’ll bless the wine. We’ll speak ancient words over a modern miracle.

And yes, we’ll dance – slowly, maybe, but with hearts overflowing.

I already know there won’t be a dry eye in the room.

  • Because this moment isn’t just about them.
  • It’s about healing something older than memory.
  • It’s about reminding everyone watching—children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren—that it’s never too late to claim what is sacred.
  • To receive blessing.
  • To stand beneath tradition and say: We are still here.

This is what Rabbi On Demand was made for.

Not just life-cycle events, but life-affirming moments.

Moments where time bends, and the past, present, and future meet under a canopy of hope.

I can’t wait for this one.

Stay tuned – because this story is only just beginning.
