Last month, I had the privilege of officiating one of the most meaningful Bar Mitzvahs I’ve ever been part of – not in a synagogue, not in a fancy venue, but in the lounge of Montefiore aged care home.
The story begins with a message from a family who weren’t part of a synagogue. They described themselves as “unaffiliated.” They’d been considering skipping a Bar Mitzvah altogether. It just didn’t seem to fit their world. That was until a friend told them about Rabbi On Demand.
They reached out with a question: Could we have a small ceremony at Montefiore so the grandmother, who lives there, could be part of it?
My answer: Absolutely. Judaism doesn’t have to come in one size or one space. I told them I’d bring the Torah, tailor a journey for their son, and make it personal.
Over the following weeks, we worked together to create something meaningful. I met with their son – an intelligent, curious, down-to-earth young man and we crafted a Bar Mitzvah journey that was relevant, empowering, and true to who he is. We didn’t just focus on reading Hebrew. We talked about Jewish values, identity, responsibility, and standing tall in a complicated world.
And when the day came, wow – he stood before his family, his grandma, and a few residents and staff from the home, and he nailed it.
He read from the Torah with confidence. He gave a short d’var Torah (speech) that moved the room. His parents were beaming. His grandmother had tears in her eyes.
There were no spotlights, no big stage. Just heartfelt words, a sacred scroll, and a boy stepping into Jewish adulthood surrounded by love.
Afterwards, his mum said to me: “We never imagined this could be part of our lives. You made it not only possible, but beautiful.”
This is why I do what I do.
