A Rabbi and a Holocaust survivor

Rabbi Yossi

I started my “I’m a Rabbi — Ask Me a Question” pop-up table to spark honest, human conversations — with anyone, anywhere.

Twice, I invited a Holocaust survivor to join me. At first, she was hesitant. Sitting out in public, taking questions from strangers — it’s not easy. But she agreed.

We sat side by side, two generations of Jewish experience — her with the weight of history in her eyes, me with a table and a sign — and together we spoke to whoever stopped by. We answered questions, we listened, we shared, and somehow, just by being there, we brought people closer.

She came again. Then, for a while, I went on my own — to beaches, universities, bridges, and faraway places.

This week, while I’m in Fiji officiating at a wedding, my phone buzzed with a message:
“Rabbi, I missed doing your table with you. When can we do it again?”

It stopped me in my tracks.

What started as an idea to reach out, to build bridges, became something that touched both of us — a quiet act of courage, healing, and faith in humanity.

Sometimes, the questions we sit with aren’t asked by others — they’re the ones that sit inside us, waiting to be answered together.
